Downsizing Takes Work, But It Doesn’t Have to Mean Heartache

Our Take

Downsizing your home can be a great choice to simplify your life, other times it is a necessity for health or budget reasons. No matter the reason for your downsizing, it can be hard to leave a home you have lived in and get rid of things that have been a part of your life. Taking time to declutter and say goodbye is important, but it is equally important to look ahead and plan some exciting projects for your new home. During the home renting or buying process of your new place, make sure you find something that you really enjoy. Maybe it even has a special feature that you have always wanted. This will give you something to look forward to as you leave the home you love. Now as you turn to your current home, you no doubt just see a lot of work ahead of you. Make things simpler by renting a dumpster. This will allow you to quickly and easily get rid of items that you no longer want or need, without changing your mind after the fact.  You should also see what items family and friends might want. That way you know they are going to a good home. Once you get to your new home, have fun putting out the furniture and decorations that you kept, to make the place feel like home quickly. You should also plan to do a couple of DIY projects like painting or buying special window treatments so that you fall in love with each and every room. Downsizing can be hard work and emotional, but do what you can to make it fun, and convert your smaller place into home, as soon as you move in.

It isn’t uncommon for people to want to downsize to a smaller home either when they retire or just before retirement. Let’s look at reasons they do that, some of the heartaches that can be associated with it and 7 tips for avoiding that heartache.
