Safety Comes First, Tips for your DIY Home Improvement

Our Take

Instead of calling in the pros, you want to DIY your home improvement this summer. If you are up for the challenge, then we say go for it. However, keep in mind that the pros do this work all the time and know how to stay safe. When you are doing work on your home, safety should be your number one priority as well. If any of your DIY work includes things you have never worked with before, like electricity, make sure you do a little homework before you begin. DIY won’t save you any money if you have to make a trip to the hospital. Some of the basic elements of DIY safety include wearing eye and ear protection, not wearing loose fitting clothing that could get stuck in power tools, and knowing how to properly use each and every tool that you pick up. Then there are specific safety measures for each project. For example, if you are on a ladder, make sure you have a spotter. You also need to check that the ladder is secure before climbing on it. You don’t want the ladder balancing on something that is unstable or have it sitting on uneven ground. Having the right ladder for the job you are trying to do, will also make the task safer. Power tools are another area of major concern for home improvement safety. Keep reading below for ways that you can stay safe when using a power saw, nail gun or power washer. Don’t rush through your work, make sure you are properly prepared and get some education from the internet before you tackle your home improvement DIY. Always keep safety in the front of your mind.

As the weather continues to get nicer, people are heading outside and working on home improvement projects. While I can’t cover every possible scenario in this post, there are definitely some very common injuries that we see in the ER that could be prevented with a few important precautions.
