Things you Should Know Before Building That Fence

Our Take

They say that good fences make good neighbors and in some neighborhoods this is definitely true. However, fences are also not a project you decide to do one weekend. There are a number of decision you need to make and things you need to know before taking on this project. Don’t expect to do it in a weekend either, unless you have a very small yard. Two of the first things you need to know are your property line and what building codes your town may have on fences. Some places have height restrictions as well as other construction restrictions. Then you need to decide the purpose of the fence. Are you building it to have more privacy in your yard from your nosy neighbors, do you want do keep you dog safely in your yard or it is just for decoration? This will help you to determine the type of material that you should use, the height the fence should be and the style of it. You could also skip building the fence all together and plant one. There are a wide variety of plants that work well as boarders and privacy screens. This is also a much easier option to execute then building a fence. If you are going to build a fence, you need to talk to your neighbors about it before doing anything. After all, it is also their property line so they should know what is going on. You don’t want to build anything that will make them mad either or your good fence really won’t make for good neighbors.

Before you install a fence, ask yourself what your reason is for installing it. If it’s strictly utilitarian — keeping the dog in the yard — you can probably get by with a basic chain-link fence. If you’re looking to block noise or add privacy, you will want something tall and solid. Chances are your wishes are complex: You want to protect pets, but you also want to add a decorative element to your home’s exterior. Whatever its purpose, a fence can function in many ways, but the first step is deciding what you’re looking for to choose one that works for you.
