Truck dropping off roll off dumpster

Protecting your Driveway from Roll Off Dumpster Damage

There are a number of things to consider when you are renting a roll off dumpster. What is the best location for the dumpster in order to cut down on travel time between it and the project? What location will cause the least disturbance to property and of course where will the dumpster fit? In general, dumpsters shouldn’t cause much damage to your property, however if space and therefore your choices of location are limited you might want to take measures to protect your property.

The first thing you can do to protect your property is choose the best surface area. If concrete is an option, that is the number one choice as it can hold the weight and won’t cause any impressions on the surface.  Asphalt is also a good choice however there is more of a chance that an impression can be left. While this is rare there is a chance. We do not recommend placing your roll off dumpster on grass or soft ground, however if it is your only option we recommend putting something down like plywood to disperse the weight.

If you are placing the roll off dumpster on asphalt here are a couple of suggestions.

  • Place the dumpster on the most level part of your driveway
  • If it is in the heat of summer try to put the dumpster in the shade. Hot asphalt is more vulnerable to impression.
  • Place boards under the wheels to spread the weight out, just as you would if you placed the dumpster on grass

The weight of your dumpster is another thing you should consider. The heavier your dumpster the more likely it is to cause damage.  So if you are planning on filling it with heavy appliances or other heavy items you want to make sure you are taking every precaution you can to keep the surface under the dumpster protected.

One last thing to think about is the path you will be taking to and from the dumpster.  Try to choose a path away from any landscaping so that you will not accidentally walk through it or drop something in it. If you are worried about your lawn getting worn down or pieces of trash falling out along the way you can once again place plywood on the ground. You might also want to consider placing tarps around to collect any debris.

If you have any questions or concern make sure you consult with your dumpster rental company before the dumpster is delivered. Most dumpster companies are not liable for any damage done to your property.
