Brick home in the fall

Welcome In Fall with a Weekend Decluttering

Our Take

The changing of the seasons is always a great time to welcome in a fresh start. In the spring you clean out all that dust and dirty air that has been sitting in your house all winter long. That should mean in the fall you clean out everything you have accumulated all summer long. Just think about the sand, the nick knacks from your weekends away and all of the things that you neglected at home, while out enjoying the summer sun. Take your weekend of decluttering very seriously and really make a difference around your home. Start by renting a dumpster so that you don’t hold on to things you should get rid of. Now think about all of the areas of your house that you start to change over for the season anyway. If you are putting away your summer wardrobe and pulling out your fall/winter one, go through each piece and only keep what you really wear. The same goes for your jackets, sheets and kitchen dishes. This is also a great time to get rid of expired food and plan to eat those foods that will expire soon. You know you have been shoving things in your attic and garage all summer (or even all year) long, but the spaces have been too hot to spend time in. With the cooling weather you will get cooler spaces to work in and no more excuses for the clutter. Of course you want to take time this fall to enjoy the changing leaves and fall activities, but by spending one of those weekends decluttering, you will be setting yourself up for a calmer winter.

Nature gives us a great cue in the fall: let go of what no longer serves you. The trees know to drop their leaves. The days get shorter, nights get longer, and we stay home more. This is the perfect time to turn our attention to our house—and clear out the clutter. We clear out the old to make room for the new, just as leaves fall in autumn so new ones can bloom in spring. Here are some season-specific tips to help declutter your home this fall.
