Dumpster FAQs: Junk Removal Company vs. Dumpster Rental Company

There are several types of projects that produce large amounts of garbage and waste materials. Few people are equipped with the proper tools and know how to haul the waste off to the proper facilities on their own. You will need a large weight bearing vehicle that will be filled and emptied by you several times, the fuel for multiple trips to the correct facilities, and in some cases the permits needed to drop off waste  at these facilities. In the end it can be a lot of back breaking work that can be more costly than it is worth.

Depending on how hands on you would like to be there are two main choices when it comes to disposing of large amounts of waste, hiring Junk Removal Services or getting a Dumpster Rental. Junk Removal Services typically advertise that they will do all the work for you, including getting that freezer out of the basement. Keep in mind that you will most likely have to pay for additional trips.  Calling them back because you found more waste after they left or needing them to return after filling up their vehicle because you have more waste to dispose of, could start to add up.

Dumpster Rentals require the renter to fill the container on their own, but conveniently on their own schedule as they generally rent by the week. Dumpsters are best utilized by projects needing several days or longer, so you can take your time filling it as you go. The larger rental window also allows room for projects that take longer than originally expected as you are in charge of the pickup day.

There are a couple other specifics to consider when making the choice between these two options. Your location may effect pricing as companies’ costs vary depending on the type of municipality it is in and what type of disposal facilities are available. If considering dumpster rental, your location and dumpster placement may require a permit. Every municipality is different and you should check in with them first. Sometimes, your local dumpster rental company will be able to guide you to the correct channels and authorities. Junk Removal services are fast and as long as they are parked legally and not for longer than street laws allow, typically do not require permits and the fees that go with them.

Finally, the size, type and amount of waste you are disposing of are the most important factors to consider when it comes to comparing prices between the two services. If you only have a couple of items and they are large and too dangerous to move on your own, Junk Removal Services may be your best bet. However, if you are dealing with a large amount of waste that includes items like concrete and construction waste, storm and yard debris or multiple pieces of furniture and appliances, a Dumpster Rental is probably more cost efficient. One dumpster FAQ is “What can I put in my dumpster?” Answer, “Almost anything.” Fortunately, another bonus to dumpster rentals is that other than Hazardous Materials (oil, paint, and toxic chemicals) they will haul off almost anything. Junk Removal companies commonly have a larger “Do not take” list depending on their size and abilities.
